Three police officers placed on leave after suspect shot and killed
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Three officers with the Chesterfield County Police Department have been placed on administrative leave after shooting and killing a suspect early Thursday morning.
Officers responded to a residence on Birnam Woods Drive at around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 24 for the report of a disturbance and shooting, according to police.
Police said the initial report indicated a man "had fired a handgun during a dispute" and then left. The vehicle of the person who reported the incident was damaged, but no individuals involved were injured.
Once a description of the suspect was obtained, officers began to search the area, eventually finding him at the intersection of Genito Road and Old Hundred Road at a BP gas station.
Officials said the suspect then pulled out a firearm and shot once, prompting the three officers at the scene to fire back.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and as of the time of reporting, detectives are currently working to identify him and notify his family, according to police.
No officers were physically injured during the shooting, and the three officers involved have been placed on administrative leave with pay.
