Three without a home, pet dead after large house fire in King and Queen

KING AND QUEEN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A family is without a home and their pet is dead after a large fire engulfed a King and Queen County home on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Aug. 27, firefighters with King and Queen Emergency Services were called to a home on Newtown Road for report of a house fire.

When they arrived, firefighters found that the home was engulfed in flames, with fire showing through the roof.

Crews were able to put out the flames in about half an hour, using over 9,000 gallons of water in these efforts, per fire officials.

While the family was able to escape the home, one person had a burn injury. Additionally, a pet died in the fire. No firefighters were injured.

Three people were displaced by the fire's damage. They are being assisted by the Red Cross.

Fire officials said that the fire was caused by an accidental cooking fire. The home had no working smoke detectors.

Units from multiple other fire agencies -- including Upper King and Queen Volunteer Fire, Walkerton Community Fire Association, Caroline County Fire, Central Volunteer Fire Department and Lower King and Queen Fire -- aided King and Queen Emergency Services in responding to this incident.
