Tips to avoid overexertion in winter weather: VDEM

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) has shared tips on how to prevent overexertion when shoveling snow and ice.

VDEM posted tips on ways to avoid overexertion during the winter storm, especially when performing physical activities such as shoveling snow and ice or pushing a broken-down car.

Cold weather can trigger heart problems while doing physically demanding tasks.

To avoid overexerting yourself, remember:

  • Stay warm
  • Frequently take breaks
  • Try to pace yourself
  • Do not push through any chest pains

If you begin to feel dizzy, short of breath or nauseous when outside, immediately stop and seek help.
