Tommie Fund raises $142,000 in 2024, according to Richmond Animal Care and Control

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – The Richmond Animal Care and Control (RACC) shared that, in 2024, the Tommie Fund had raised $142,423 for vet care expenses. The RACC created the Tommie Fund program to help offset emergency medical costs for public animal control agencies and shelters that have strays, abandoned and/or animals in need of emergency medical services. “Thanks to the support in 2024, our RACC the Tommie Fund spent $142,423.38 in vet care expenses for pets in need at municipal shelters,” the RACC said in a Facebook post on Tuesday. Shelters and animal control groups throughout Virginia were reportedly able to make use of the funds. RACC named all of the recipients below: Amelia Animal Shelter - Virginia Appomattox Animal Shelter Charles City Animal Control Charlotte County Animal Control Clarke County Animal Control Colonial Heights Animal Control Giles County Animal Control Greensville County Animal Control Hanover County Animal Control and Shelter Henrico County Police Animal Shelter Hopewell Animal Services Isle of Wight County Animal Services Regional Animal Shelter - King William, Virginia Petersburg Animal Care & Control Portsmouth Animal Control Powhatan Animal Control Prince George County Animal Shelter Friends of Shenandoah Valley Animal Services Center Sussex County Animal Services of VA Tazewell Animal Control Donations from purchases of the "Team Tommie" license plates were responsible for the funds raised. The Tommie Fund has an annual veterinary care budget of $150,000. The Fund determines how to use the donations based on how much financial support the shelters or agencies need, as well as the urgency and the type of medical treatment that is needed. According to the RACC site, the fund does not provide funding for certain services, including any bills that are already paid, animals that are permanently adopted, any basic care and others.
