Tornado watch issued for much of Central Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A tornado watch was issued for much of Central Virginia on Monday morning, though it has since been lifted for the area.

How to prepare for a tornado

On Monday, March 16, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a tornado watch for much Central Virginia localities until 5:40 p.m. This includes:

  • Charles City County
  • Colonial Heights
  • Emporia
  • Hopewell
  • Petersburg
  • Essex County
  • Fluvanna County
  • Goochland County
  • King and Queen County
  • King William County
  • Lancaster County
  • Middlesex County
  • New Kent County
  • Northumberland County
  • Prince George County
  • Richmond County
  • Sussex County
  • Westmoreland County

A tornado watch is issued when severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area.
