TSA expects to screen 18 million over Memorial Day weekend

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- With Memorial Day holiday approaching, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is expecting a heavy weekend in terms of travelers.

Many families will be traveling around the country starting today, May 22 through Wednesday, May 28 -- TSA anticipates to screen at least 18 million passengers and crew for flights.

“TSA is ready for the additional passenger volume, and we look forward to welcoming families traveling during this peak period,” said TSA Acting Administrator Ha McNeill. “As a friendly reminder, to ensure a smooth screening experience, bring acceptable forms of ID like your REAL ID.”

According to TSA, since executing the REAL ID on May 7, 93% of the passengers present a REAL ID or another acceptable form of ID, like a passport. It is required for all passengers 18-years old and up to present a form of ID that is accepted at TSA checkpoints.

Below are a few tips TSA recommends to help infrequent travelers:

  • Pack wisely: Make sure that your carry-on bags are well-organized and in compliance with TSA regulations. If you're not sure what to pack, text 275-872 "Ask TSA" or visit Ask TSA's X account.
  • Have a valid form of ID: Present your REAL ID or bring an acceptable form of ID to show the TSA officer. For those that do not have a REAL ID or an acceptable form of ID, additional screening will need to be conducted to verify your identity.
  • Consider enrolling in TSA PreCheck: Children 17-years-old and younger can join TSA PreCheck under an adult when TSA PreCheck appears on the child's boarding pass.
