Two charged after Hopewell man found shot dead at scene of crash

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) -- Two men are facing charges after a Hopewell man was found shot dead at the scene of a crash early Monday morning.

At about 1:25 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 15, officers with the Hopewell Police Department were called to the 1000 block of Haskell Street for report of shots fired.

When they arrived, officers found the scene of a single-vehicle crash, as well as 38-year-old Jesse James Rhodes of Hopewell, who had been shot multiple times. He died at the scene.

The evening of Friday, Dec. 19, police announced that two arrests had been made in connection with Rhodes' death: 41-year-old Wendell Lamont Sturdivant of Hopewell and 40-year-old Markice Garry Haskins of Petersburg.

Sturdivant is facing a second-degree murder charge, while Haskins has been charged with accessory after the fact in a felony offense.

Police said Sturdivant was taken into custody with the help of the U.S. Marshalls Service. He was then held in Riverside Regional Jail without bond.
