Two firefighters honored for saving older woman from burning car in Prince George
PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Two of Petersburg's newest firefighters were honored for their heroism during an August crash in Prince George County. Together, they saved an older woman who was trapped in a burning car. On Thursday, Dec. 12, Braden Lape and Trevaughn Compton were among those honored at the Petersburg Fire Rescue & Emergency Services' second-annual "Our Partners in Excellence First Responders" Recognition Ceremony. Both received certificates and medals for excellence when responding to a multi-vehicle crash on Aug. 19. At the time, Lape and Compton were working with Prince George County Fire and EMS, later joining the Petersburg Fire Department through its Pre-Certified Firefighter New Hire Program. On Aug. 19, a severe crash took place near the intersection of Jefferson Park and Middle roads in Prince George. One of the cars -- in which a person was trapped -- caught fire. According to Petersburg fire officials, the two firefighters involved in that specific effort were Lape and Compton. "During the incident, Firefighter Lape played a critical role in fire suppression and extrication, while Firefighter Compton provided life-saving EMS care on scene and during transport to Southside Regional Medical Center," Petersburg fire officials said. "Their bravery, quick decision-making and teamwork ensured the survival of the patient, an elderly woman."
