VCU to retire jersey of former star Briante Weber
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Briante Weber’s electrifying slam dunks were a regular sight at the Stuart C. Siegel Center during his tenure at the school. On December 22, VCU will honor him by retiring his No. 2 jersey when the Rams play William & Mary. “It’s an honor to be recognized in this way,” said Weber. “I’m thankful to be the next to have my jersey retired, and I know I won’t be the last. Let’s fill The Stu one more time and show up for Deuce!” “Briante Weber is the heart of Havoc,” said VCU Athletics Director Ed McLaughlin. “His energy, defense, and passion for the game lit up the Siegel Center. He’s the best on-the-ball defender in college basketball and left a lasting impact on our program. I’m thrilled to see his jersey in the rafters.” From 2011 to 2015, Weber was one of the toughest defenders in college basketball. Known for his relentless defense and highlight-reel dunks, he helped lead VCU to some of its best seasons. A Chesapeake, Va. native, Weber is the only player in Atlantic 10 history to win the Defensive Player of the Year award three times. He was also just 12 steals shy of breaking the NCAA career steals record when an injury ended his final season early. Weber’s career total of 374 steals ranks fourth in NCAA history, and his average of 2.9 steals per game helped VCU lead the nation in steal percentage for three straight seasons from 2011 to 2015. VCU made the NCAA Tournament every year Weber was on the team, winning conference titles in 2012 and 2015. During his junior year, he had his best all-around season, averaging 9.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 3.5 steals per game.
