Virginia receives $75K grant to recognize, support historic sites associated with Asian Americans

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia has been awarded $75,000 in grant funds to support the documentation of many sites associated with the Asian American and Pacific Islander community in the commonwealth.

This marks the second consecutive year that Virinia has received the funds through the National Park Service's (NPS) Underrepresented Communities Grant Program, which seeks to create survey records for up to 75 properties associated with Asian American and Pacific Islanders in Virginia.

The project aims to help broaden the public's understanding of the histories of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in the commonwealth in the 20th century.

These properties include Eden Center, a shopping center in Falls Church that's culturally and historically significant to the Vietnamese American population in Northern Virginia. The center previously received a nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, according to the release.

The Department of Historic Resources (DHR) will administer the funds and oversee the project.
