Virginia Tech lets go of head football coach, names interim replacement after disappointing season

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Leadership changes are underway for Virginia Tech Hokies after relieving the head football coach of his duties due to unsatisfactory results on the field, according to a release from the university.

On Sunday, Sept. 14, Virginia Tech President Tim Sands announced that Brent Pry, who has led the Hokies since 2021, was replaced by interim head coach Philip Montgomery, the former head coach at Tulsa from 2015 to 2022.

"Unfortunately, the results on the field were not acceptable and a change in leadership is necessary," Sands said.

Sands emphasized that moving forward, the university's Board of Visitors will collaborate with leadership to create a plan aimed at restoring competitiveness within the ACC, according to the university.

"To our students, alumni, and the rest of Hokie Nation, we understand and share your disappointment with the season so far," Sands said. "As we move forward together, please join us in supporting and encouraging our student-athletes and athletics staff as they take on this new challenge."
