Virginians urged to check flood risk, obtain flood insurance during Flood Awareness Week

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- This week is Flood Awareness Week, and with today's severe weather, it couldn't be more timely.

Governor Glenn Youngkin has designated the week of March 9 through 15 as Virginia Flood Awareness Week. His office claims it is part of an effort to "emphasize the importance of flood preparedness and mitigation in the commonwealth ahead of spring downpours and Atlantic hurricane season."

Flooding in Virginia is the most common and costly natural disaster, and impacts thousands of residents and businesses each year,

Virginia Flood Awareness Week serves as a reminder that flooding doesn't only impact the coast, as the effects of Hurricane Helene on Southwest Virginia last year and heavy rains last month resulted in widespread and significant destruction.

Here are some ways renters, homeowners, and business owners can reduce potential flood damage, according to a release from Youngkin's office:

  • Store important documents in waterproof containers or on the upper floors
  • Caulking windows, doors and gaps where pipes and wires enter a building
  • Label propane tanks with the owner's name and address
  • Choosing waterproof flooring like tile over carpeting on lower floors

"Understanding your flood risk and taking action including securing flood insurance and taking steps to protect your home can make a difference when it comes to protecting lives and property," said Director of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation Mathew Wells.
