Virginia’s ‘Day of Play’ encourages kids to unplug and reconnect
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Gov. Glenn Youngkin is encouraging children to unplug, get outside and reconnect with their communities by declaring Saturday Virginia's "Day of Play."
According to a release from the governor's office, Saturday, Aug. 9, is the Commonwealth's "Day of Play," with the main event taking place at Taylor Farm Park in Henrico County.
“In a world glued to screens, we’re hitting pause and inviting our kids to rediscover joy in motion and community in conversation. Our Commonwealth Day of Play and cell phone-free classrooms create spaces where every child can explore freely, connect face-to-face, and build the physical and emotional resilience that only unstructured play can deliver.” Gov. Glenn Youngkin
The "Day of Play" is coordinated by the governor's office, as part of the Reclaiming Childhood initiative, a statewide public awareness initiative created to help students by encouraging physical movement over screen time.
Families can enjoy interactive games and creative activities at Taylor Farm Park, located at 200 Whiteside Road in Sandston. They can also learn more about agencies, such as the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, the Virginia Department of Education, the Department of Social Services, and the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.
According to the governor's office, the "Day of Play" is reportedly grounded in research that highlights free play's impact on childhood development. While new data reveals children typically spend 5-7 hours on screens daily, the day aims to reverse the rising trends in screen time for children and encourage screen breaks and being outside, as well as the connection between a parent and child.
“Prioritizing children’s play—unstructured and screen-free—gives them the freedom to imagine, laugh, and to simply be kids,” said First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin. “The Commonwealth Day of Play is a reminder that well-being begins in the wonder of a summer afternoon spent in motion and in community. Glenn and I are proud to support this effort to reclaim childhood, and with it, the mental wellness of Virginia’s young people.”
