VSU honors life of Chesterfield County leader Jim Holland with honorary degree
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginia State University (VSU) announced that it's honoring Chesterfield County leader Jim Holland who represented the County's Dale District, with an honorary degree.
Holland's passing was announced Tuesday afternoon on Oct. 14 after his battle with cancer. A celebration of life for Holland was held back in October.
VSU announced it will recognize the late public figure and Army veteran for his "unwavering advocate for the University with a Posthumous Honorary Degree during its Fall 2025 Commencement Ceremony."
The honorary degree serves as a reminder for Holland's commitment to education and public service extended deeply to Virginia State University," according to a press release.
Holland was a former college professor who was an advocate for secondary education. The university said he also "consistently championed opportunities that strengthened the relationship between VSU and Chesterfield County."
The former Chesterfield County leader will be recognized with one of the institution’s highest distinctions, reserved for individuals who have made significant, lasting impacts.
"In recognition of his enduring contributions and his decades-long support of the University, VSU will award Holland a Posthumous Honorary Degree," the university said in the press release.
Jim Holland dedicated his life to making a difference for others,” said VSU President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah. “He was a true friend to Virginia State University and a champion for education. His legacy of compassion and service will continue to live on in the community he loved.”
