WATCH: Driver killed in fiery crash after truck shot at on I-295 in Hanover

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A driver was killed in a fiery crash after state police say they were shot at along Interstate 295 in Hanover County on Tuesday.

At about 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23, state troopers with Virginia State Police were called to I-295 southbound near Pole Green Road for report of a crash.

When troopers arrived, they learned that a 2011 white Ford F-150 pickup truck had run off the road, crashed and caught fire. State police said that someone shot at the truck before it crashed.

An 8News viewer who drove by the scene just moments after the crash occurred shared a video of what she witnessed. You can see a vehicle engulfed in flames on the shoulder and heavy smoke pouring into the sky.

The driver of the truck died at the scene. At this time, state police are working to identify the driver and notify their loved ones.

All southbound lanes are closed as of the time of reporting, with drivers being detoured off the highway at Chamberlayne Road (exit 41A), according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

These closures are expected to remain in place overnight, VDOT said. They may still be in place during the early morning commute on Wednesday, Sept. 24.
