According to officials, Virginia State Police Senior Trooper Pilot Andy Wood, Chesterfield Firefighter Chris Orr and Chesterfield Lieutenant Mike Abbott flew 87 nautical miles to the site, located about a mile up into the mountains.
Once on scene, Firefighter Orr was lowered to the scene, which was surrounded by trees. Officials said the hole in the tree canopy that Orr was lowered into measured 15 feet by 15 feet.
While Orr was on the ground assisting a ground crew and loading the child into the Baumin Bag device for hoisting, Med-Flight 1 remained airborne.
According to state police, the helicopter then hoisted Orr and the patient in tandem and flew the patient to the University of Virginia Medical Center for treatment.
