Watch the Southern Delta Aquariids meteor shower from Henrico’s Taylor Farm Park
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Looking for a way to finish off your Tuesday evening? Henrico County's Taylor Farm Park will welcome visitors to watch the Southern Delta Aquariids meteor shower during its peak.
From 10 to 11 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, Henrico County Recreation and Parks invites visitors to watch the Southern Delta Aquariids meteor shower at Taylor Farm Park, located at 200 Whiteside Road in Henrico County's Sandston area.
Visitors are encouraged to bring a blanket and watch the meteor shower as it reaches its peak, lighting up the night sky with roughly seven to eight meteors per hour.
According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Southern Delta Aquariids are active beginning in mid-July and are visible until late August. The meteors are reportedly faint and difficult to spot, and not visible if the Moon is out. Tuesday's moon phase is a waxing crescent.
Those who are hoping to catch a glimpse of the meteor shower -- whether at Taylor Farm Park or from home -- are recommended by NASA to find an area away from city or street lights and lie flat on their back.
Then, NASA said viewers should look halfway between the horizon and the zenith -- meaning directly overhead -- and 45 degrees from the constellation of Aquarius, as this can improve your chance of viewing the meteor shower.
In less than 30 minutes in the dark, NASA said your eyes will adapt and you will begin to see meteors. Viewers are reminded to be patient, as the show will last until dawn, so there will be plenty of time to catch a glimpse.
