What should you do if you see a downed power line in Virginia?

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- With many reported power outages throughout Virginia, residents may be wondering what to do if they come across a downed power line. Here's what Dominion Energy recommends doing to stay safe.

If you see a downed power line, Dominion Energy says you should stay at least 30 feet away from it, as it should be considered energized and dangerous.

Virginia residents should call Dominion Energy at 866-366-4357 to report a downed line, and provide as much information about the location and condition of the line.

If a downed power line presents a clear and imminent danger to you, your home or others, call 911 first.

In addition, the energy provider said to remember that electricity travels, so you should never touch a downed power line with any part of your body or with any object. Electricity can move through conductive materials like water, wood, metal, string and plastics.

If someone directly or indirectly touches a downed powerline, do not try to rescue them, as you could risk becoming a victim yourself. Dominion Energy said you should call 911.

If a power line falls on your vehicle, the energy provider said you should:

  • Stay inside the vehicle until help arrives.
  • Warn others not to touch the vehicle and have them call for help.
  • If you must leave the vehicle, jump as far away as possible with both feet landing on the ground at the same time. Don't touch the vehicle and the ground at the same time.
