Youngkin asks Virginia to take a ‘moment of prayer and reflection’ for Charlie Kirk

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginians are asked to take a moment on Friday to join in a statewide "moment of prayer and reflection" for Charlie Kirk, a conservative influencer who was shot and killed on Wednesday.

Early in the afternoon on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 31-year-old Kirk was shot in the neck at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.

Kirk was speaking to a crowd during a “The American Comeback Tour” stop for the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, of which he was a co-founder. The shot rang out while Kirk was answering questions about mass shootings.

Virginia leaders spoke out about his death, sharing their shock and their grief.

On Thursday, Sept. 11, Gov. Glenn Youngkin issued a proclamation calling for a "moment of prayer and reflection" dedicated to Kirk, which he said is to take place at noon on Friday, Sept. 12. His office issued the following statement alongside said proclamation:

"Suzanne and I continue to pray for the soul of Charlie Kirk, and for God to bring all comfort and healing possible to his wife, children, friends, and loved ones.

The darkness of a soul who would murder a dad and husband can be described as nothing other than pure evil. The acceptance of murder or violence as a solution to political disagreements must be rejected, otherwise our Nation’s very soul will suffer irreparable decay.

As we remember the atrocities of September 11, 2001, and the response of a nation who unified against evil, we must come together again to reject all forms of violence and hold accountable those who refuse to do so.

On Friday, September 12, 2025, at noon, I call on all people of the Commonwealth of Virginia to join in a moment of prayer and reflection on what it means for us as a Commonwealth and Nation to come together." Gov. Glenn Youngkin

Youngkin has also ordered that Virginia and U.S. flags outside of state and local buildings are to fly at half-mast until sunset on Sunday, Sept. 14.
