Youngkin to ceremonially sign bill to fund construction of new Rappahannock River bridge
MIDDLESEX COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Gov. Glenn Youngkin will ceremonially sign a bill on Thursday allowing a replacement project for the bridge over the Rappahannock River to begin eight years early.
On Thursday, Aug. 28, Gov. Glenn Youngkin will ceremonially sign the Senate Bill 1082 -- or the Commonwealth Transportation Special Structures Program Revenue Act of 2025 -- to accelerate the replacement construction of the Robert O. Norris, Jr. Bridge.
SB 1082 authorizes the transportation board to issue revenue bonds to fund the project.
The replacement project for the Norris, Jr. Bridge, which connects the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula over the Rappahannock River, was originally set to begin in 2038.
In April, the governor's office announced that it would be accelerated and would begin in 2028.
The new bridge project is expected to include wider travel lanes, fully functional shoulders and higher guardrails, according to a release from the governor’s office.
The ceremonial signing is set to take place at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at the White Stone Volunteer Fire Department at 579 Chesapeake Drive in White Stone.
