PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- The City of Petersburg honored 12-year-old Ramir Parker as a city hero for rescuing his grandmother and infant siblings from their burning home earlier this month.

On Tuesday, June 3, Petersburg Fire Rescue and Emergency Services responded to a fire at the family's home in the 2000 block of Burks Street. By the time they arrived, Parker had already guided his family to safety.

According to the fire department, Parker was upstairs in the home when he heard a crackling and rattling noise. He went to check on his 1-year-old and 2-year-old baby brothers, who had just woken up from a nap in the living room.

Parker went into the hallway, where he saw thick, black smoke coming from the basement. That's when he ran into the smoke-filled room, grabbed his brothers, and guided them and his grandmother to safety.

Today, Parker's hometown honored those actions with a proclamation designating him an official city hero.

"The city of Petersburg recognizes Ramir Parker in celebration of his remarkable heroism and in acknowledgement of the inspiration he provides to our whole community," the proclamation reads.

Parker was also made an honorary member of the Petersburg Fire Department.

He will throw the first pitch at the Tri-Cities Chili Peppers baseball game on Wednesday.
