12-year-old girl fighting for her life after possible accidental shooting in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A 12-year-old girl is fighting for her life after police said she was possibly shot on accident by a 15-year-old family member in Richmond early Monday morning.

At 1:24 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 5, officers with the Richmond Police Department were called to the 1200 block of Admiral Gravely Boulevard for the report of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found a 12-year-old girl with a gunshot wound. She was taken to a local hospital with a life-threatening injury.

Police said a 15-year-old boy, who is a family member, was detained at the scene. Detectives are investigating the incident as a possible accidental shooting, but the investigation is ongoing.

The 15-year-old boy was charged with reckless handling of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a minor. Additional charges are possible following further investigation, according to police.

“I cannot begin to imagine the pain the family is experiencing,” said Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards. “But firearms in the hands of young people is a recipe for tragedy, pain and loss. I urge everyone with a firearm to secure it properly – and take whatever steps necessary to ensure our young people do not have access to firearms.”

A spokesperson for Richmond Police said the department distributes free gun safes to Richmond residents. To request a free gun safe, call 804-516-0451.

Officials continue to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call Major Crimes Detective S. Brown at 804-646-6456.
