17-year-old boy charged after caller reports possible gunfire on I-295

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 17-year-old boy is facing multiple charges after police received a report of possible gunfire on Interstate 295 Sunday evening.

At around 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5, law enforcement received a 911 call regarding possible gunfire along I-295.

A deputy with the Hanover County Sheriff's Office, who was already on the interstate conducting a traffic stop, saw a silver BMW matching the suspect description heading north on I-295.

When the deputy pulled onto the interstate, officials said the BMW immediately fled, prompting a pursuit.

Virginia State Police were reportedly not involved in the pursuit but were called to assist with the investigation.

Troopers worked alongside Hanover investigators to collect evidence and conduct interviews. After the Hanover County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office was consulted, a 17-year-old boy was charged with the following:

  • Shooting from a vehicle, a felony
  • Possession of a firearm under age 18, a misdemeanor
  • Possession of a firearm by an alien not lawfully in the U.S., a felony
  • Reckless handling of a firearm, a misdemeanor

“We remain committed to swiftly and thoroughly investigating any report of gunfire on our highways,” said Captain Ted Jones, Division I Commander with Virginia State Police. “Thanks to the quick action and collaboration of our troopers and our partner agencies in Hanover and Henrico, we were able to identify and apprehend those responsible before anyone was harmed. This type of teamwork reflects the best of law enforcement coordination and service to the community.”

The incident remains under investigation.
