18-year-old Richmond soccer player nominated for 2024 Young Player of the Year award
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- An 18-year-old Richmond native has been nominated for USL League One's 2024 Young Player of the Year award. According to the Richmond Kickers, 18-year-old Griffin Garnett has been nominated for the USL League One's 2024 Young Player of the Year award after he was a stalwart in the backline for the Kickers, leading the team in 80 clearances and nine blocks. The Kickers said Garnett's first season with the team saw a meteoric rise from signing a USL Academy contract during the preseason to signing a professional contract 16 days before his 18th birthday in August 2024. According to the Kickers, Garnett became the second-youngest player to sign pro in the club's history. Garnett reportedly ranked in the top five on the team in tackles won and interceptions, with 21 tackles won and 14 interceptions. He had a passing accuracy of about 87% and sent nearly 77% of his passes forward, finishing tied for second on the team with a minimum of five starts. “Being able to learn from veteran professionals was such a big influence on my development not only on the field but off of it as well. To be nominated for this award is an honor and I’m so grateful to everyone who has helped me along the way,” Garnett said.
