20th annual St. Benedict Oktoberfest to return to Richmond’s Museum District with a taste of Munich
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Preparations are underway for the 20th annual St. Benedict Oktoberfest set to take over Hanover and Belmont Avenues in Richmond's Museum District.
The three-day festival, which starts on Friday, Sept. 19, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 21, will feature German cuisine, more than 50 German and craft beers, stein-holding contests, chicken dances, vendors and more. Admission is free.
Proceeds from the event benefit students wanting to continue their Catholic education and the church's parish school.
Church member Ruppert Beirne started the festival in 2005 to celebrate the parish's German roots and give back to students.
"I had been to Oktoberfest in Germany and thought that it was an ideal event for us because St. Benedict evolved from a German-Catholic parish in downtown Richmond," he explained.
You can head to the festival on:
- Friday, Sept. 19, from 4 o 11 p.m.
- Saturday, Sept. 20, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Sunday, Sept. 21, from noon to 6 p.m.
On-street parking is available throughout the Museum District and at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture for a small fee. More details can be found here.
St. Benedict Catholic Church is located at 300 N. Sheppard St. in Richmond.
