32-year-old woman charged after hidden narcotics found in medical brace at Albemarle jail

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 32-year-old woman is facing felony charges after police said they found concealed narcotics in a medical brace at an Albemarle jail.

The Albemarle County Police Department on Friday, Jan. 2, said they had recovered about 100 sheets of suboxone hidden in a medical brace at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.

The discovery came after staff at the facility initiated a drug investigation.

Suboxone is an addiction treatment medication used in opioid replacement therapy, according to the American Addiction Centers.

Police said the brace was left at the front counter with jail staff. The suspect, 32-year-old Brooke A. Maddox, of Verona, was no longer at the jail when the drugs were discovered through a screening.

Maddox turned herself in on Thursday, Jan. 1, at the Augusta County Sheriff's Office. She was charged with one felony count of delivering a controlled substance to a prisoner, per Albemarle Police.

Maddox was released on an unsecured bond.

Police continue to investigate. Anyone with information on the incident can contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 434-977-4000.
