33-year-old arrested in e-bike, e-scooter thefts on, near VCU campus

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with multiple e-bicycle and e-scooter thefts on or near Monroe Park Campus at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).

On Wednesday, Oct. 8, VCU Police announced the arrest of a 33-year-old man experiencing homelessness in connection with these thefts.

The man had reportedly been seen on VCU security cameras removing e-bikes and e-scooters from bicycle racks on at least four occasions over the span of two weeks.

Detectives have charged the man with the following:

  • Felony possession of burglarious tools
  • Three counts of petit larceny -- misdemeanor

He also faces a previous warrant for violation of a court order from Henrico County.

“Our detectives received multiple tips from community members and law enforcement partners that led to the identification of this individual. We thank everyone who shared this information and aided in our investigation,” said Clarence T. Hunter Jr, chief of VCU Police. “Our investigative teams' diligence and hard work should be commended as well. Those who might plan to target the VCU community members for theft should know that our security camera system is an incredibly useful tool in our investigative toolbox.”

Other charges related to similar thefts near VCU are pending, according to VCU detectives, who also said the university's security camera system features more than 1,800 cameras reportedly positioned across both campuses and satellite locations.
