33-year-old man sentenced to 4 life sentences for alleged possession of child sexual abuse material

GREENE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 33-year-old Greene County man who allegedly possessed child sexual abuse material (CSAM) was sentenced on Tuesday to four life sentences along with an additional 60 years in prison.

On Tuesday, Feb. 17, 33-year-old Steven Kyle Edward Smith, of Madison County and Ruckersville, was handed down a sentence of four life sentences along with an additional 60 years after entering a guilty plea months prior for alleged possession of CSAM.

Smith faces two counts of sodomy with a victim less than 13, two counts of film CSAM with a victim less than 15, two counts of object sexual penetration with a victim less than 13 and two counts of possession of CSAM, the sheriff's office said.

"We would like to express our gratitude to the hard work of the Greene County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division that worked long hours on this case," the sheriff's office wrote in Tuesday's press release.

This comes months after the sheriff's office's Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) unit received information about an individual, later identified as Smith, who allegedly downloaded images described as sexual in nature and involving juveniles under the age of 18, per the Greene County Sheriff's Office.

On March 14, 2025, the sheriff’s office’s ICAC then executed a search warrant in Madison County at Smith's temporary home, but when authorities arrived, he was not home.

Soon after, officials said Smith was found in the town of Culpeper and arrested, where he was charged with possession, reproduction, distribution, solicitation and facilitation of CSAM, along with taking indecent liberties with a child by a person in a custodial or supervisory relationship.
