46-year-old man arrested in Caroline for multi-state credit card theft
CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 46-year-old Maryland man is facing charges for a multi-state credit card theft that authorities say happened in late December 2025.
On Dec. 22, 2025, investigators began investigating reports of unlocked vehicles being entered in the evening hours along Gatewood Road and Paige Road in the Woodford area of Caroline County.
Detectives found that a victim's credit card, which had been stolen from their vehicle, was used during the same evening in Charles County, Md., per a March 3 press release from the Caroline County Sheriff's Office.
Investigator S. Owens began coordinating efforts across state lines, even traveling to Charles County to personally obtain and review security camera footage from multiple businesses.
He was able to identify the suspect and the suspect's vehicle.
According to the sheriff's office, Owens then met with detectives from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office to obtain a search warrant for the suspect’s vehicle and conduct additional investigative research.
On Feb. 3, 2026, Owens obtained arrest warrants for 46-year-old Lamar Maurice Williams, of Upper Marlboro, Md., who was charged with two counts of felony credit card theft, felony obtaining more than $1,000 by false pretense, two counts of misdemeanor obtaining money by false pretense and a misdemeanor of unlawful entry into a vehicle with intent to commit a crime.
A few weeks later, on Feb. 25, 2026, Williams was taken into custody without incident by the Prince George’s County Police Department in Maryland.
He is currently being held at a detention facility in Maryland pending extradition proceedings to Virginia, the sheriff's office said.
“I am very proud of Investigator Owens’ diligent work in this case. His outstanding work ethic and persistence were instrumental in identifying the suspect and bringing this case to a successful resolution," Sheriff Scott Moser said in a release. "I am also very thankful for the assistance of our law enforcement partners with the Charles County, Maryland, Sheriff’s Office, and of course I remain thankful for our citizens who continue to support the CCSO as we work together to protect our neighborhoods and hold those who cause our citizens harm accountable.”
Victims of these stolen credit cards were able to recover all financial losses, per the sheriff's office.
Authorities also urge residents to lock their vehicles and remove valuables, especially during evening hours.
“Together, we will continue to strengthen our community and make Caroline County a model for others to follow," Moser said in a release.
This case remains under investigation.
