515-acre data center campus in Charles City one step closer to reality
CHARLES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A zoning application has recently been submitted as Charles City County prepares for the development of a new data center.
Plans are in the early stages for an extension of Roxbury Development Center in the form of Roxbury Technology Park -- a new data center campus courtesy of Diode Ventures. The site is currently made up of 515 acres of five forested properties, according to Diode's website.
Diode submitted a conditional rezoning application to to the Charles City County Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors as part of the zoning and land use approvals stage of the project.
The next steps include a review of the proposal from the planning commission as well as an allowance period for public comment, according to Diode. Following final approval from the Board of Supervisors, Diode will consult with local agencies and utilities before moving on to the site plan approval.
In terms of the data center itself, the Diode website defines it as a facility containing "computer servers, storage devices [and] networking equipment," as well as other equipment that serves the purpose of storing, processing and managing larger quantities of data.
Diode also said that they aim to "minimize disruption" during development and eventual construction, estimating that they will have a "comprehensive traffic management plan" in place to respect the local community and its heritage.
In the same vein, Diode outlined several alleged benefits for the community that accompany the data center project, including tax revenue, jobs, infrastructure and more.
