6-year-old boy dead after crash on I-64 East in Henrico
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 6-year-old boy is dead after a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 East in Henrico County on Sunday evening.
Virginia State Police said the two-vehicle crash took place at 8:18 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18, on I-64 East near the Nine Mile Road exit.
Police said an initial investigation shows that a vehicle traveling on I-64 East lost control while the driver was on their phone.
The vehicle spun in the roadway and hit the central guardrail.
According to police, a second vehicle traveling behind the first attempted to avoid the initial crash. The driver lost control and ran off the side of I-64 through a guardrail and down an embankment before hitting a tree.
A 6-year-old was sitting in the rear of the second vehicle and was not wearing a seatbelt, according to police. The boy was partially ejected through the rear passenger-side window, police said.
The boy died from his injuries at the scene.
The driver of the second vehicle was not injured, though police continue to investigate the crash.
