71-year-old identified as driver who died after crash, vehicle fire on I-95 in Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 71-year-old man has been identified as the driver who died after his vehicle went up in flames after a crash on Interstate 95 in Prince George County.

On Wednesday, June 18, 71-year-old Daniel Maryland Jr. was identified as the driver whose vehicle burst into flames after hitting an overturned box truck on I-95 in early June.

Just before 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10, Virginia State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash northbound on I-95 at the 46-mile marker in Prince George County.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a 2025 Hino box truck was traveling south on I-95 when it hit the guardrail on the left shoulder. It then crossed into the grassy median and overturned onto its side in the northbound lanes, according to Virginia State Police.

Police said a 2007 Ford Ranger pickup truck was unable to avoid the vehicle and hit it, resulting in the pickup truck bursting into flames.

The driver of the box truck, a 31-year-old man from Peterson, Pa., was not injured, according to police.

However, driver fatigue appears to be a factor in this investigation.

Charges are pending review by the Prince George County Commonwealth’s Attorney, and the crash remains under investigation.
