8News meets Puppy Bowl contestants

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- 8News got the chance on Tuesday morning to meet several contestants who will compete in the Puppy Bowl adoption event this weekend.

Good Morning Richmond Anchors Autumn Childress and Delaney Hall were joined by Demure, a Cairn Terrier that is representing Virginia on Team Ruff in the upcoming Puppy Bowl -- happening on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. on several different streaming platforms.

Demure comes from Green Dogs Unleashed, a rescue organization based out of the Troy area of Louisa County, who has been participating in the Puppy Bowl for around 11 years.

"It's a really phenomenal way to get the word out about all of these dogs that need homes," Said Mai Guss, an employee at Green Dogs Unleashed. "Also, you get to see a lot of really cute puppies that span all different breeds and all different states just running around and chewing on toys and playing with each other."

The Puppy Bowl is an annual event that happens right before the Super Bowl, showcasing hundreds of adoptable puppies from rescues all around the country.

Lucy Moneymaker, Demure's owner, explained to the anchors that Demure was rescued from a puppy mill hoarding case in Greene County this year. He was also nominated for most valuable player, and will be on the field, in action, this Sunday.

Guss then talked a bit more about what Green Dogs Unleashed does, including their work with special needs dogs and therapy dogs. Overall, their mission is to ensure that dogs end up going to the homes best suited for their needs.
