App State overpowers Dukes with a big second quarter

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- App State rallied from an early deficit and utilized a 24-point outburst in the second quarter to seal a 34-20 victory over James Madison at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Saturday afternoon. In their second straight win against JMU, the Mountaineers were bumped up to 5-5 on the year and 3-4 in Sun Belt play. The Dukes came down to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in league matchups. The Dukes reached an early 14-0 lead in the second quarter by holding App to 11 yards in the first, but the App State 24-point surge set the hosts up for the lead with a 64-yard touchdown pass and a blocked punt for a score. Noe Ruelas connected from 52 yards to bring JMU within 24-20 after halftime. App responded with a 76-yard drive and Marshall kicked it up to 31-20 heading into the fourth. On a 41-yard field goal from Michael Hughes, App took its lead to 34-20. The Mountaineers then made a red zone stop to hold on for the 34-20 win with 2:41 remaining. JMU will close out the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 30 for Senior Day with a game against Marshall. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. at Bridgforth Stadium.
