Get a taste of Germany at the 54th Richmond Oktoberfest

DOSWELL, Va. (WRIC) -- The 54th Richmond Oktoberfest is returning to Meadow Event Park in Doswell on Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19 for a taste of authentic German culture and cuisine. Guests can experience live German entertainment including the ACCA Sauerkraut Brand, Bavarian dancers and beer garden music with Dan Smith. Authentic German food will also be on the menu including bratwurst, roast pork, potato salad and red cabbage. A variety of German beer featuring beverages from Warsteiner, Paulaner and Bitburger breweries will be available. Soft drinks and German wine will also be offered. Organizers say they anticipate about 4,000 people over the course of two days. The first festival was held in 1969, and was created by two ethnic German clubs: Gesangverein Virginia and the Deutscher Sportclub. "There were a couple of guys that were with the army in Germany, and they happened to go to Munich, see the original Oktoberfest, and they liked it," Hans Stienen, Richmond Oktoberfest board member, told 8News. "They said, 'We need this in Richmond.'" The first festival was held at The Abbey, a space in the old Holiday Inn off Robin Hood Road. Since then, the festival has moved to various venues across the area before landing at Meadow Event Park. The hours of the festival are: Friday, Oct. 18 from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 from 3 to 11 p.m. Tickets start at $15 for active-duty military, veterans, seniors and students. Tickets cost $18 for adults. Children 15 and under get in free. All tickets can be bought at the door. For more information about tickets to the event, visit Richmond Oktoberfest's website.
