PHOTOS: ‘It looks very good!’: Parents weigh in as Petersburg revamps its school lunches
PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Some Petersburg City Public Schools parents say they are pleased with the unveiling of the new and improved school lunches now being offered to K-12 students across the district. The school division took to Facebook earlier this week to announce its new partnership with Taher, Inc. Professional Food Service Management and the nutritional improvements that have been made through that partnership. These changes come after William Taylor, a Petersburg High School parent, made a viral Facebook post in late August showing what his daughter and her classmates were receiving for lunch. Following this news, 8News spoke with Taylor to get his thoughts on the new lunches. "It looks very good! Looks like something I would actually eat this time," he said. When Marcel Demming, a Petersburg High School alumnus, saw the original pictures Taylor had posted, he told 8News that it brought him back to when he was in high school, as he didn't find his school lunch appealing then. "It almost felt worse than that," Demming said, "Honestly, they went backwards for a little bit—that's what it seemed like in that [Taylor's] image." (Photo: Petersburg City Public Schools) The new school lunches have both men praising the presentation of the food, adding that they believe it is a reflection of the new leadership brought to the division -- that being the appointment of superintendent Yolonda Brown. “They're actually acting out on our voices," Taylor said. "I feel like this is a good step in the right direction.” “I'm able to see a change directly -- and in an expedited way, as well," Demming said. "So, you're doing a good job, Ms. Brown! Keep it up.” Some parents and members in the Petersburg community have mentioned they have not seen these new lunch changes in all schools. 8News reached out to the school division for comment on these claims, which said it is currently working on the request.
