Art & Architectural Review Board approves new courthouse in downtown Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Downtown Richmond is set to see a new courthouse building on after approval from the Art and Architectural Review Board (AARB).

Commonwealth Courts, as it's referred to, will be located on the southwestern corner of the historic Capitol Square in Downtown Richmond. The space is expected to stand at 13 stories with a building area of around 309,000 gross square feet (GSF).

According to the June 6 meeting agenda, the site will be located near 9th street, Bank street, 10th street and the Powell U.S. Court of Appeals Courthouse. Commonwealth Courts will also feature 31 parking spaces, and include a basement level to the building.

The agenda said this building has been built, "In response to the unique demands of a 21st-century courthouse while integrating timeless organizational and proportional design elements."
