At least 4 people injured, suspect arrested after early morning Charlottesville shooting

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) -- At least four people were injured, including the 20-year-old suspect, after a shooting in Charlottesville early Saturday morning.

Just before 12:45 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, officers with the Charlottesville Police Department responded to multiple 911 calls about an active shooter in the 1100 block of River Road.

According to police, an officer was nearby, heard the gunfire and quickly responded.

Four people were found with gunshot wounds, with responding officers beginning to administer "lifesaving medical care." This included department-issued tourniquets and trauma kits in what the Charlottesville Police Department described as an "extensive crime scene."

Police said a preliminary investigation shows that a confrontation occurred during a private party on River Road. It led to shots being fired inside the building, hitting two people.

According to officials, the incident continued outside and another person was injured following additional gunfire.

The alleged suspect, 20-year-old Juan Gavin Castillo of Greene County, was also shot and faces the following offenses:

  • Malicious wounding
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • Maliciously discharge a firearm within a building or dwelling house

All four people -- a 44-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, a 20-year-old man and Castillo of Charlottesville -- were taken to UVA Medical Center, and are now in stable condition.
