Average gas prices in Virginia, Richmond remain above $4 per gallon
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Gas prices in the Greater Richmond region and across Virginia have remained at $4 per gallon since they passed the mark less than a week ago.
Regular gas prices averaged $4.06 across the commonwealth as of Monday, April 6, up about 18 cents from last week's $3.89. Gas prices this time last year averaged $3.08 in Virginia.
The Richmond-Petersburg area is among the localities with the highest prices in the state, ranging from $4.13 to $4.22, according to AAA. Prices across the region averaged $4.15 for regular fuel, up nearly 22 cents from last week and 90 cents from a month ago.
According to GasBuddy, the cheapest gas station in Richmond recorded $3.86 per gallon while the most expensive recorded $4.50 as of Sunday, a 64-cent difference. The lowest gas price in the state was $3.59 per gallon, while the highest was $5.09.
Going back five years, here's how much gas cost on April 6:
Date Gas prices per gallon in Richmond Gas prices per gallon across the U.S. April 6, 2026 $4.15 $4.06 April 6, 2025 $3.08 $3.21 April 6, 2024 $3.48 $3.59 April 6, 2023 $3.44 $3.55 April 6, 2022 $4.00 $4.15 April 6, 2021 $2.71 $2.87
This came after prices nationwide had also soared, jumping more than $1 in one month between February and March and now averaging $4.12 per gallon. Diesel prices in the U.S. averaged $5.62 as of Monday, which GasBuddy said is 25 cents away from setting a new all-time record.
GasBuddy cautioned that fuel prices will continue to climb as tensions escalate between the U.S. and Iran.
"At this point, the trajectory of fuel prices remains highly uncertain and is largely contingent on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz— until that occurs, the risk of further increases remains firmly in place," said Patrick De Haan, GasBuddy's head of petroleum and analysis in a release.
