Man charged after shots fired at car, causing crash, power outage in Colonial Heights

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) — One person is facing multiple charges after a car was shot at in Colonial Heights, leading to a crash and a power outage in the area on Saturday.

Authorities with the Colonial Heights Police Department said on Monday, April 6, that they've arrested 34-year-old Dominique Armani Johnson in connection with the incident on Saturday, April 4.

At around 12:45 a.m., police responded to a report of a crash at the intersection of Conduit Road and School Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a vehicle off the roadway near the intersection of Conduit Road and Pleasant Dale Avenue.

Police determined that the car had hit a transformer, causing a power outage for a "significant portion of the area." The driver told police that an unknown person shot at his car, causing the crash as he was trying to flee. He had minor injuries following the crash and was taken to Petersburg Southside Medical Center.

Police said they canvassed the area after the incident, but the suspect had already fled before officers arrived. They shortly identified a person of interest and arrested Johnson on Sunday in the 100 block of Dunlop Farms Boulevard.

Police also carried out a search warrant at a home in the 900 block of Dogwood Avenue, where Johnson had allegedly been staying. Another person at the home was arrested for an outstanding failure to obey a court order warrant through the city of Petersburg, according to a release.

Johnson is facing multiple charges, including:

  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • Shooting into an occupied vehicle
  • Shooting within 100 feet of a school
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • Reckless handling of a firearm

He's being held without bond awaiting his next court appearance in Colonial Heights General District Court.
