Benjamin Harrison Bridge to close for improvements

CHARLES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Benjamin Harrison Bridge will close next weekend as construction aims to improve the bridge, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

VDOT announced earlier today, July 10, that the Benjamin Harrison Bridge over the James River -- on Route 156 (Jordan Point Road) and Route 106 (Roxbury Road) -- between Charles City and Prince George counties will be closed for two weekends this summer.

The first closure will be next weekend at 1 a.m. on Friday, July 18, through 5 a.m. on Monday, July 21. The closure is said to affect both vehicular and marine vessel traffic, according to VDOT.

VDOT recommends that motorists follow the following detours:

  • Northbound Routes 156/106: Take Route 156 (Jordan Point Road) south towards Route 10 (James River Drive) west to I-295 north and take Exit 22A towards eastbound Route 5 (New Market Road) back to Route 156/106.
  • Southbound Route 156/106: Take Route 106 (Roxbury Road) north towards Route 5 (New Market Road) west to I-295 south and take Exit 15A towards eastbound Route 10 (James River Drive) back to Route 156/106.

The second closure is set to begin at 1 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, through 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 4.

If anyone has any questions about the development of this project, they can call VDOT’s customer service center at 800-367-7623.
