Body found in York River believed to be missing Richmond man

GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) - The body of a man was recovered Tuesday morning near the area where a Richmond swimmer went missing from Gloucester Point Beach, according to the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say the body of the man, who is believed to be 50-year-old Steven Kendall Wright, was found floating face-down in the York River shortly after 10 a.m. by Camp Peary Police Officers.

Wright, who reportedly did not resurface from the river according to a 911 call around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, was found 0.45 miles from the Gloucester Point Fishing Pier. Deputies say this was near the middle of the river between Gloucester and York counties.

The body will be taken to the Tidewater Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Norfolk for positive identification and to determine the cause and manner of death.

Abingdon Fire & Rescue assisted in the recovery of the body from the river.
