Breaking down Virginia primary election results
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- 8News Political Analyst Rich Meagher is breaking down the results of Tuesday’s primary elections in Virginia.
As of the time of reporting, the race to be the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor remains too close to call, despite Sen. Ghazala Hashmi (D-Chesterfield) holding a lead over five other candidates.
“The top candidates all have different geographic bases, different strengths, different identities that they might appeal to to bring in the Democratic base -- so I think, in the Lieutenant Governor’s race, we were expecting something close,” Meagher said.
In the race for Attorney General, former delegate Jay Jones defeated Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor.
Meagher said Jones will fill a key role on the Democratic ticket.
“You hate to sort of check off boxes about people’s ethnicities or race, but there is a question in the Democratic Party nationally right now about, 'Can we turn out Black voters? Do they trust Democratic candidates?' -- and having a candidate who is African American helps to speak to those communities, helps to bridge that divide,” Meagher said.

Meagher said that, whoever rounds out the Democratic ticket as their lieutenant governor nominee, Democrats are in good shape come November.
“Whoever of these candidates that appear to be heading toward victory, have a shot at victory -- all of them are polished, and are ones that the Democratic Party here in Virginia can really count on to protect the lead,” Meagher told 8News.
All election results are unofficial until certified.
