Can I vote in Virginia’s special election on Jan. 6? Here’s how to find out

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Voters in both Richmond and Chesterfield County will have the chance to pick new state legislators during a special election in early January -- but are you one of them? Here's how you can find out.

On Tuesday, Jan. 6, a special election will be held to fill two recently-vacated seats in the Virginia General Assembly. Early voting for these races began in late December.

Firstly, the race is on for the Senate District 15 seat previously held by Lt. Gov.-elect Ghazala Hashmi, who is stepping down from the Senate to take on her new role. This race features Democratic nominee Del. Mike Jones (D-Richmond) and Republican nominee John Thomas.

Secondly, Jones stepped down from House District 77 to run for Senate District 15. Democratic nominee Charlie Schmidt and Republican nominee Richard Stonage will face off to fill his House of Delegates seat.

These two districts include parts of both the city of Richmond and Chesterfield County -- but do you live in this voter area? Thankfully, there's an easy way to find out.

Virginians can find out which voter districts they are a part of by using this interactive map from the Virginia Department of Elections.

All you have to do is search for your address in the search box in the upper-right corner. The map will then take you to the address you entered and return your voter district information.

Chesterfield voters can also check out this interactive map if they'd like to learn more about their respective magisterial districts and school board members.
