Charges pending against driver who police said headed wrong way on I-64 in Henrico County, crashing into car

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Charges are pending against a driver who police said drove the wrong way on Interstate 64 in Henrico County Monday evening, heading west in the eastbound lanes and crashing into a car.

At 10:56 p.m. on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, Virginia State Police responded to the report of a driver heading the wrong way, driving west in the eastbound lanes of I-64 near its interchange with I-295 in Henrico County.

Moments later, police said a crash was reported involving multiple vehicles in that area.

When troopers arrive, they found a 2018 Mazda CX-5 off the right shoulder and a 2017 BMW 5-series in the left lane, both with extensive damage. Police said debris from the crash was scattered across all lanes of the interstate.

Twenty-seven-year-old Caroline Paige Weeks of Fredericksburg was identified by police as the driver of the wrong-way vehicle and was detained at the scene. Charges are pending, according to officials.

Police said Weeks and the driver of the BMW were taken to a local hospital for treatment. A third vehicle reportedly had minor damage after the driver swerved to avoid the crash and hit debris.

Eastbound traffic was diverted at Exit 200 while crews worked to clear the scene. All lanes have since reopened.

Officials continue to investigate.
