Chesterfield apartment shooting leaves nearby residents heartbroken

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Some residents on and near Whetstone Road were asleep when a Chesterfield County officer was shot on Friday morning -- they said their community is normally quiet.

Certain residents in Chesterfield County are thinking about their own safety tonight after police said 36-year-old Antonio Robinson shot a police officer in the leg at around 6 a.m. on Friday, June 27.

That officer was taken to the hospital for non life-threatening injuries, but the news of a shooting happening in the neighborhood hit the residents hard -- heartbreak was a common theme.

"It happening here with the amount of people that live here…not out of the likelihood, but it breaks my heart. It is just a reflection of the underlying issues that people are facing that lead to circumstances like this," said Whetstone neighbor Nicholas Jenkins.

"I feel the same way," said another nearby resident Oryan Logan. "That's somebody's child and grandchild and nephew who got shot."

The officer was invited inside a Whetstone home where the shooting took place, and that's where authorities said Robinson fired.

Jenkins -- who works for the Chesterfield Food Bank -- is asking for people to not be afraid to reach out if they need help.

"If you are facing circumstances and feel overwhelmed, you're not alone. Reach out to the Chesterfield Food Bank. We have a client advocate program which will help connect people to resources and you're not alone. It's okay to not be okay," Jenkins said.

Police said no one else was injured and an investigation is ongoing. Robinson is being held at the Chesterfield County Jail without bond on malicious wounding charges, among other offenses.
