Chesterfield authorities still looking for VSU campus shooter

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The weekend shooter at Virginia State University (VSU) is still on the loose after killing someone on campus Saturday night.
That victim -- who had no connection with VSU -- was found not far from the VSU Multi-Purpose Center and was certainly the talk of campus when it happened.
While VSU may look like normal college campus, it's possible that unsuspecting visitors are unaware someone was shot dead on Third Avenue on the night of Saturday, Oct. 4. Officers came to the area just after 11 p.m., where they found the victim.
Now, a few days later, students told 8News they generally feel safe -- but one student had concerns.
"This morning I was very much mourning what happened because it's tragic," said VSU Junior Daniel Gunn. "It's sad to have anybody lose anybody on campus."
Gunn heard the shots ring out and lives at Quad II, close to the crime scene.
"As you can see, Quad II is right here. The parking lot where it happened at is right outside the gate. So, anybody can walk through right there. It does bring concerns to the safety on campus," Gunn said.
Saturday's shooting comes just about a month after potential threats were made at some historically Black colleges and universities, including Virginia State.
Most students told 8News they feel safe, including Gunn some of the time.
"I think the university is doing a great job — all that they can, especially with the extra security guards," Gunn said.
Fortunately for them, Chesterfield Police said they believe they are close to finding their suspect.
Officers have yet to release the victim's identity, but those who have information are encouraged to give Chesterfield Police a call at 804-748-1251.
