Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office warns residents of returning jury duty scam

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office is warning residents for at least a fourth time since March 2024 of scam calls asking residents to pay for missing jury duty.

According to a social post from the county sheriff's office, county residents are reportedly receiving calls from suspects posing as employees with the sheriff's office. The caller advised residents to pay using a prepaid card in order to "lift the bond" and avoid going to jail.

If you or someone you know is contacted by someone claiming to be an employee with the sheriff's office and are unsure if you are speaking with an actual employee, advise the caller you will call them back to verify their identity.

The Sheriff's Office said that they would never tell a person to pay money to make a charge allegedly disappear and would not ask you to meet a deputy and pay with a pre-paid card.

If you or someone you know believes they are a victim of a phone scam, you are urged to contact the Chesterfield County Police Department at 804-748-1251.

This scam comes less than a month after Chesterfield Police reported similar missed jury duty scam calls in May, as well as others made in the county several months ago.
