Chesterfield Fire and EMS said the engine and its firefighters onboard were heading back to the station after clearing up from a separate accident along I-95 when the crash occurred.
"Thankfully, only minor injuries to firefighters and civilians occurred, and no one was transported to the hospital," Chesterfield Fire and EMS said in a Facebook post.
Chesterfield Fire and EMS said the highway is "one of the most dangerous places" where its firefighters work.
Following the incident, Chesterfield Fire and EMS is urging drivers to stay focused on the road to prevent crashes from occurring, including when crews are responding to a scene.
"We often tell you to make sure you move over when you see emergency crews or flashing lights on the side of the road, but it’s also important to always be aware of your surroundings. Give your full attention to the road, maintain the speed limit, and maintain a safe following distance. Don’t stop on the highway unless it’s an emergency and avoid all distractions behind the wheel. We want all drivers, including our firefighters, to make it to their destinations safely," Chesterfield Fire and EMS said.
