Chesterfield to rename road in honor of fallen sheriff’s deputy

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Chesterfield leaders are renaming a county roadway to honor a fallen sheriff's deputy.

At 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18, the county will hold a ceremony to rename Academic Way near Deep Creek Middle School to honor Archer T. Belcher, a part-time sheriff's deputy who was killed in the line of duty in 1912, according to a press release from Chesterfield County.

Officials said Belcher was the first documented county deputy to have been killed in the line of duty.

On Jan. 22, 1912, while overseeing a work crew repairing a section of Hickory Road in Matoaca, Belcher was brutally assaulted by three inmates and died three weeks later at 47 years old, the release said. He left behind his wife and 10 children.

The ceremony will be held at 17151 Westerleigh Parkway. There will be light refreshments at the event.
